In summary, there are new features in the STMicroelectronics PowerSTEP01 stepper drivers. It is available in current mode control, where the decays are managed automatically, or voltage mode which achieves a true 128 microsteps. The motion engine allows the user to generate speed profiles and positioning commands and moves the workload from the processor to the driver. There is non-dissipative control of the current, and daisy chain operation is possible resulting in the use of fewer microcontroller GPIOs. As a complete digital interface to the MCU, the PowerSTEP01 drivers allow the designer to use less components. The powerSTEP01 performs all the calculations and hence only one microcontroller is required, even if the application involves the use of several motors.
